near Ushuaia, Argentina, La Providencia
Anyone traveling to Ushuaia and wants to get off the beaten track, I have the perfect destination. From Ushuaia you have to return on Route 3, the road you took to get there. Heading back toward Tolhuin, 40 km's from Ushuaia, you come to Route J (now called Route 33), a good gravel road, which goes down to Estancia Harberton, the first farm on Tierra Del Fuego. You can spend a pretty penny and stay there, see the museum they have, etc. Or, once you get to the Beagle Channel, take the right fork which goes to a small crabbing community called Almanza. (I see that road isn't on Google Maps, or on most maps.) Continue on 15 km's and you'll come to a gate for a naval station, which is the end of the road. Go back less than a km and you will see a house with a wooden sign on the gate, La Providencia. They will welcome you with open arms, nothing fancy, but good food, a bed and the friendliest people you could want. Tell them Steve, the biker, told you about them. They are Raul, Gogo and Jorge. I stayed there 4 nights.
