A summary of some back and forth between Bunny and I for all to see:
It is pavement all the way. South from Cusco to the pass south of Sicuani there are some rough spots, mostly patched asphalt. South of the pass you get into the pampas, and the road is mostly newish and straight, where you can make great time. There is one rough bit north of Juliaca. South of Juliaca towards Puno there are some short gravel (packed) sections where they are working on the road, only a few kms. Otherwise new surfaces and fast travel.
The road west of Juliaca is in good shape, mostly newish surface all the way to Arequipa. It is mostly straight and fast until you start the descent into Arequipa, then it gets twisty.
Allow 5 hours from Arequipa to Puno, 6 from Puno to Cusco.
