Argentina expired TVIP
The TVIP for my bike which is currently stored in Argentina is about to expire and I'm trying to decide to spend $2000 in airline fare and related cost to fly down there on Thanksgiving weekend and ride it into Uragruy to renew the permit or simply allow it to expire one week before I'm planning on returning to continue the ride on December 19th.
Does anyone have any experience with exiting Argentina with a TVIP that is expired by only a week or two?

I've been in and out of Argentina at least 30 times on a bike. I rode down in '08 and am in Arg now.
I've heard horror stories about overstaying your permit.
I've also had great experiences at the border.
It just depends on who you meet that day and how much Pe$o-nality you have.
technically, they can (and have) confiscated the bike. The fines are UGLY.
They are adament about NOT allowing it to be imported - it's impossible - i tried several times and i've since become a resident - no way.
I knew i would be overstaying my stay once and got an extension pushed through the aduan central office in BsAs. It took a friend with connections to get it pushed through in time.
my suggestion, get it out of the country (and possibly back in). you can keep it in uruguay for up to a year without problem. they are really lax.
you might also sell it in argentina to someone looking to start a journey here (riding to patagonia or north.)
i've had success selling my bike in a similar manner on the HUBB. you can also list it on ADVRIDER. you must sell it to a non-argentino who is prepared to leave the country before the temp import permit expires. in my case i got 50% wired to me, I did the DMV paperwork to change it to their name, and then traded the certificate of ownership for the balance of $. not simple but it worked. I thouth it was crazy but since then I've seen several people driving on photo-shopped ownership documents (ie. sell the bike withouth bothering to go through channels) - it works because each state has its own DMV paperwork and there's no way an authority here will know the difference between the various countries, let alone the various states paperwork...
One way to do this is to leave Arg on the Buquebus (the ferry) in Buenos Aires where they will look at the ownership papers and import permit and then, when you get to the other side to enter Uruguay, there is a seperate official and the person entering Uruguay need not necisarily be the same person who left Argentina. I did this when I sold mine to a russian. Normally, they have combined aduana offices and you can't switch ownership a the border.
Good Luck,

Contact Javier at DakarMotos.com -- he may be able to help you, or pay someone to take the bike to Uruguay/back for far less that $2000....

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
