If you want the real thing, then you can buy SOAT, (Seguro de daños corporales causados a las personas en accidentes de transito), in many outlets like supermarkets, (eg; Exito) or gas stations. Cost is COP 277,000,(Euros 100), per annum, but I believe you can get it for shorter periods. You can only get third party cover in country, but I have been known to get away with a an english-language medical insurance policy in the past.

I spent a long time looking for coverage for a short term. I went to the head SOAT office. They said it is ONLY available for 1 year. Anybody that is selling something for less time/money is selling you something else. (Maybe insurance for a bottle of aguardiente? Quien sabe?)
Like you alluded to, if it looks 'official' it will probably pass for insurance.

beware that the SOAT is not for material damage, only covers the physical part. So better still try to avoid running into that Mercedes SLK ...

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
