Buy In Country, Sell In Country

The HUBB has provided many threads enabling a foreign tourist

to adventure overland on a motorcycle throughout Central and South

America.

This new thread is dedicated to archiving specific questions and

answers about buying and selling a motorcycle in any Central or South

American country where the motorcycle is registered.

Please post on an existing thread, not this one, or start a new thread for any

unrelated questions.

So, as covert operation agents have said for years, "What happens in

country, stays in country."

For the purpose of this thread , a bike bought in a country, stays in that

country.

Please identify the Central or South American country in the title of your

post.

There are many benefits of buying and selling a bike in country.

- You avoid shipping and customs problems and expenses.

- Your purchase will help the people and the economy of the country.

- Your license plate will not be the reason you are "targeted" as a foreigner.

- You will not be limited by Temporary Vehicle Import Permit time limits.

- You can fix up each motorcycle you buy, ride it, sell it for more than
you paid for it, and repeat the process in the next country you visit.
When you are ready to return home, sell the last motorcycle you
purchased and pocket the money! Or, store the motorcycle in country for
your next visit.

- Racks can be fabricated for any motorcycle, in country, and you can
use the same gear, panniers/saddlebags etc. for each motorcycle you buy.

My goal is to gather all questions and answers about buying and selling locally

registered motorcycles in each Central and South American country, in one easy to read thread.

Remember, please identify the Central or South American country in the title of your post.

Wink Buying in Lima, Peru

Xfiltrate: good idea.
We're from Canada and are looking to do several trips of 4-6 weeks into SA over the next few years, leaviung the bikes in S.A fgor the duration. Buying seems the way to go, and we're looking at Peru. Here's what Solo Moto Peru offered me:

New ones I can offer you the following:
-YAMAHA SUPER TENERE 1200 2011 Fully equipped -------------------- > list price $ 24,590 including: side cases (L+R); inner bags; Top case; Engine guard; tank bag; skid plate; head light protector; grip heater. I can sell it now for $ 23,360 . We have these in stock: blue and black colors.

-YAMAHA XTZ 660 TENERE ----------------------- > $ 13,890

KTM 990 Adventure 2011 ------------------------ > $ 23,000 (only with side cases) . We are experiencing some troubles with parts and service on these bikes, so I will recommend you go for the new Yamahas. These bikes are giving us a lot of satisfaction and no problems at all. Plus service is guaranteed all over south america.
I can also offer you the new TRIUMPH XC 800. This bike sells for $ 18,000.

Let me know what you will like to do.
Best regards

Buying in Colombia

Colombia is a great country for a motorcycle trip because you can travel it in a circle and return to where you started.

In 2009 my friend and I bought 2 wee 125cc semi-china bikes from AKT ( www.AKT.com.co ) at a cost of $1250 each. They came with helmets, chalecos (the vest with the numberplate printed on it), insurance, a 12,000km warranty and all paperwork was done by the shop which took 5 days. Services (wash included) were performed for free (you had to pay for oil) at 500km and every 2000km thereafter at AKT certified mechanics, which are everywhere across Colombia, even in the smaller off-the-grid towns. We saw most of the country with our odo's reading just over 5000km so the guarantee is good for whatever you want to do.

Once finished (after 2 months) we sold the bikes in Cartegena - in a big rush to make the boat - for $850 each. Had we have returned to Bogotá with more time I am sure we would have sold them for more but regardless, the whole thing was smooth as clockwork and we were very happy with the experience.

Buy and Sell in Country... Argentina

Well done Pockethead. I neglected to mention the 12 month 12,000 K

warranty available with the purchase of several brands of new bikes in

Argentina. There are new bike dealers in Argentina who will buy back bikes

purchased new, if they are still under warranty.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
