Buying in Chile

Hey guys. I've been roaming this forum for a few days looking for answers. I just moved to Chile from Australia and am now living here for 6 months- 1 year. I'm with my Mum and little brother. The plan was to buy a motorbike (quite a few shops around where I am) and learn to ride. My Dad rides back home so he'd love for me to learn.

Well I found a bike and all that but there is a problem. I don't have a motorbike licence . I'm 18 and have my drivers licence back home (provisional). Asking around led me to believe that the cops aren't too worried. If I want to buy a motorbike though I have to get it signed in a locals name as my RUT papers are only temporary so far. I have to wait a few months till it comes through. The guy who was going to help me out said he won't do it because I have no licence except my car one. If there is a problem it would lead back to him and the cops asking why he gave me the bike to use.

Does anyone have any idea's on whether or not it would be possible for me to get a bike and not get screwed over by the feds if I got caught? I can get lessons to ride properly too. Where I am (Vina del Mar) the traffic isn't too bad so i'm not too worried. I can ride, just not well :P.

Thanks in advance. Any other things I can add let me know. Cheers!

Thumbs up

No real expertise on the subject, but I would say try to get your licence over there. At least then its legit' and you can legally cross over to go to Mendoza in Argentian too, and that is highly recommended. Why run the risk of getting caught and restrict the things you can do to boot?

I say get in touch with the authorities and find out if you can pass a test there. If you have a residency there, then I don't see why you can not be a road user too, but the licencing authority can tell you that. they are pretty organised in Chile.

If you can tell your clutch from you back brake and you throttle from your choke, I should think you can apply for a test date pretty quickly. Brush up on your road signs and any quirky overtaking, stationing rules and you should be fine to pass straight away, i expect...

Good luck and get out of Vina. Go and see Valpo! Loads of character!

Cheers for the help. Yeah I went clubbing in Valpairiso. Lots of fun! It's cool over there. Yeah I have a mate who said he can call someone and ask if it's possible for me to get a licence. Sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the help!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
