Calling all Arequipeños: KLR 650; new tires and possible rebuild in Arequipa, Peru

Currently, in Cusco on route to Arequipa via Lago Titicaca. Ideally I'd like to pick up a new rear tire for my 2000 KLR in Arequipa before hitting up Colca Canyon. Can anyone recommend a tire shop in Arequipa? Furthermore, I've been having constant oil burning issues since a recent engine rebuild in Colombia. There is a good chance that I will be coming back to Cusco to do volunteer work and the idea would be to leave the bike in Arequipa while waiting for parts, repairs, etc. However, the most important thing would be the reliability of the mechanic. Any more recommendations here? Muchas gracias!

More info on the engine issues I've been having:

Don't know about Arequipa, but you can easily find tires and repairs in Cuzco. There's a whole block of parts stores--ask anyone you see on a bike--and good advice at Perumototours, Saphi 578.

Hope that helps.

Arequipa KLR-650 with starting problems.

I'll travel tomorrow to Arequipa to seek a mechanic that can repair my bike, a KLR-650 2009. Starting problems. Advise about mechanics and spare parts stores.

Thanks for the replies.

Missed the opportunities at Cusco, didn't really like the touristy/thievery vibe; also my brother's wallet was stolen (pick pocketed) so it was time to go.

Currently in Arequipa, I ended up ordering a tire (Pirelli MT 60) from Lima and had it shipped (10 soles) to the Honda dealership here overnight: José Olaya 318, distrito Cerro Colorado, tel - (054) 252429. The people on the phone were very helpful, I spoke with Gonzolo. I'm going to pick up the tire tomorrow before riding to Colca Canyon. Will report on the conditions of the shop and if they are able to do the rebuild. I'm enjoying Arequipa much more.

Good luck with the starter problems!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
