Camino de la muerte
"Is there any body out there ...?" (Pink Floyd)

...who can tell me wether it is still possible to take the camino de la muerte from La Paz to Coroico?

I am thinking about a trip to Bolivia next year, and during the first preps i read that might be closed because of a new, less dangerous road. I wonder if someone has an actual answer ...

Hey,
i was there just about 3 months ago and it is true that they build a new road. But usually they are quite slow with that kind of matter. Well in the end the new road might existe, but I am quite sure, that you will be able to ride the old road afterwards too. Maybe just by mountainbike (since that is a large tourist business and they do certainly not want to destroy their little tourist industry).
So even if you could not take the old road, it is a must to go down there. There are a lot of other roads to go around La Paz. For expample the skiing resort next to La Paz (see http://www.clubandinoboliviano.org). Very nice area.

yep, although the new road already exists. But it was (and probably still is?) closed due to landslides in the last rainy season.

ooops - that's funny! I thought one reason to build the new road were thos landslides...

Well i hope i get it managed to go to Bolivia anyway. And: definitely not only for the death road. i'm pretty sure the country has much more to offer

B.t.w., does anybody have an idea what time of year will be the best to travel the whole country on a motorbike?

that is always a bit tricky.Jungle and altiplano aereas differ a bit. Often it is either dry and very cold in some places or very wet and warm in others.I would rather avoid this last one(- dec. to march+) If the rainy season is on time then the best periods would be april/may and sept/oct.

Hello, I was one week ago on The death road, but going downhill on a normal mountaibike. I saw one biker( I think it was BMW, passed a little bit fast).It's true they are building a new road but they will keep the old one open for mountainbikes, so I guess also for motorbikes. I think you Can drive trough Bolivia almost the whole year, except the whet season january and februari.

i was there 6 months ago and it was AWESOME!. i heard they were building a new road but who cares....with the way the gov works in bolivia im sure the camino de la muerte will be anything but. and frankly its more fun when u get to pass trucks and buses. and btw....its not very dangerous unless you ride carelessly but it's quite an amazing ride to say the least
