Can´t Send personal effects into Chile!?
Hi all,
I was hoping to post out my RST pro series jacket, gloves, etc to Chile. However, my father in the UK said to me that the postal service he was using said it is not possible to ship out ´personal effects´to Chile. Does anyone have any advice on this? Sounds ridiculous to me!

It may be that they expect customs problems/hold ups and don't want the hassle.
Try another shipper. Or find someone flying out who can take them out as luggage.

"Personal effects", especially when it is expensive gear, usually only works if it is in your accompanied luggage. Anything else might be subject to customs duty and lots of paperwork.

Hmm, thanks for that.
Anyone have any experiences with this? Can I have it posted as a gift?
Anyone selling a decent touring jacket in Santiago?

Chilean Customs are a pain in the ass, frankly. Took me 6 weeks to receive parts for my Tenere, had to pay import tax (fair enough) but also a hefty in-country courier's fee. This is common practice with all the couriers apparently. I was tracking the parcel and it was in Chile for all but 48 hours of the transit time, mostly sitting in customs. Same experience when I had a passport sent out from UK, and a camera from USA.
Whilst I didn't try labelling the goods a 'personal effects', the camera was listed as 'gift' on the box and I still had to pay import. From my overall experience of Chilean Customs, I would guess they will still tax up on 'personal effects'.
Peru on the other hand.... just got a new camera sent down from USA via USPS, which is delivered by the national postal system in Peru. Two weeks max from post to receipt, and inexplicably I didn't pay anything extra on collection (probably just lucky) Can you wait until Peru??

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
