Can you only buy leaded gas in Bolivia?
Hey guys, I heard that you can only buy leaded gas in Bolivia and was wondering if there was any truth to this?

Its quite hard to tell when its served out of a bucket!
My 1150GS and my g/f's KLR650 ran fine on whatever it was though, even at 5,000m.

With low octane
Hi Gatogato,
that was still true for me in 2005. Worse however is the fact that the gasoline has little octanes, max 70-75... You should buy and add the expensive octane boosters, otherwise your engine will "klonck". And many strikes lead to a shortage of fuel, so whereever you find some, fill up the tank, then you are good to "flee" the country if there are new protests... Good luck.

Cheaper by half is my recollection.
I used the premium fuel when I could find it. In the mountains there was often only the low octane stuff, but my KLR ran fine on it as there is so little air up there, the engine compression is much less. Don't know if it was leaded or not.

Cheaper by half sounds heavenly.
Such low octane sounds like my 8 cylinder van will run like crap.
Anything I can do??

Thanks Irishkev, I just got to La Paz and am still looking for the higher quality stuff. I am glad that I bought two 1.25 gallon containers worth of 90 octane in La Paz now.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
