Carnet de Passage
Hello together,
just as an Information: I just came back from a trip through the following countries: Chile, Argentina, Bolivia Peru and Brasil
We were just once asked for the Carnet and we did as we would not know what they were speaking about, so they just changed to topic and we acctually never needed that document. So inthe end I recommend to riders visitig those countires not to organise this Document. In addition you can then sell the bike in those counties without any problems. We had a lot opportunities to sell them, but could not because of the Carnet.

In what country is your bike registered? Where did you entered South America?

does not really matter in which country the bike is registered (except if it is a peruvian bike). C de P´s are not necessary anymore in SA although they sometimes try to make you beleive it is (= want for $$). About entering South America: Seems that even entering in Guayaquil is troublefree now(=no longer police escort to the border) as i have heard from some german travellers some months ago.
Only remaining problem is entering by sea in Brasil. This is still best to be avoided.

I entered South America in Valparaiso (Chile, near Santiago) and headed north, passing several times the borders of Argentina, Peru and Bolivia before leaving South america in Fortaleza Brasil.

My bike is registered in Switzerland. I have never had any troubles with costums but can confirm, that Brasil borders are very complicated and need a lot of time. Passing trough Brasil and leaving it to another SAm-country is ok.

Suzanne Danis, the lady responsible for issuing Carnets at the local (Ottawa) CAA (Canadian Automobil Association) informs me that the trouble spots in SA are still Colombia, Venezuela, and Equator, if arriving by air. At times no one has asked for a carnet, at other times she had to air mail one down to riders being stuck at customs in one of these countries. Since I'll be riding down next month, intending to fly with bike from Panama to Bogota, I didn't want to take a chance, and bought one. It cost me Can$6,200.00 refundable deposit for my 2000 BMW F650, and Can$400.00 non-refundable service charge. Now I'm curious what will happen. I will report on my experiences on this website.

I entered Colombia (Bogota)last year by air without any problems. All the paperwork to get the bike out of custom tooked less than one hour! I found it an very easy going boarder!

werner...i think you and i mustve spoke to the same lady about the carnet's as i got the same story from a similar individual. carnets are not required in colombia as i shipped my bike by air as well. all other routes by land never require them. if asked its probably out of ignorance or for money.

anyone know if you need a carnet to get into Buenos Aires by ship, been told by the shipper that you do!

Really trying not to get one as I juts don'tr think I can afford it.

You don’t need a carnet to get into BAires by ship, airplane, car, and bike or what ever; neither to cross any border between Argentina to Mexico, that’s what I know.

nikb, they'd LIKE you to have a carnet because it makes it easier for them - but you DO NOT need a Carnet anywhere in the Americas - despite what you may hear, even at the occasional border - just say "no carnet" what else do you have?

i made it all the way down from Canada to Ecuador without a Carnet (& i was never asked for it). And i hope the other borders will also be a pice of cake.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
