"Carta Poder" USA trying to buy a bike in Colombia
HUBB Community,
I am a US citizen currently living in Ecuador on a work visa. I have resigned from my job and my visa will expire in January. I am looking to buy a bike ASAP to take a trip south starting in February. I am currently talking with a guy from Belgium who is selling his bike in Colombia (Belgium papers). We are looking for a way to make a smooth transfer of ownership.
From reading through threads, it seems like the only option is to obtain a "Carta Poder" from a Colombian Notary and hope that border officials accept the document as the previous owner's name will still be on the title (there doesn't seem to be any official way to transfer the Belgian title ownership outside the country). If all goes well I would go to Colombia and return to Ecuador with the bike, obtaining a Tourist visa at the border and a temp in my name for the bike.
What are my chances with the "Carta Poder"? Are there any other options out there? Does anybody have experience with this?
Any and all help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
