Chile Toll: cheaper heading south than north?

Hey there,

we are now in Argentina and got some short Info that the toll-feesin Chile are different charged upway and downway.

We are not shure yet if to drive down in Argentina and up in Chile (at least to Punta Arenas, maybe Ushuaia) or the other way.

So does somebody know if it costs different driving up or down in the same Area?
We would be very thankful for some advices.

Ina and Demian

Just come south but didn't notice whether there was any difference one way or the other - but logic would dictate that there wouldn't be any significant difference enough to make you change your travel plans.
For motorbikes each stage is only a dollar or two anyway. Quality road, no topes and a fair price - leaves Mexico for dead.

The charges should be the same going north or south, I've never noticed any difference.

Try to avoid the main highway (ruta 5) but other highways going to the coast to/from Santiago also know how to charge on the tolls. Bikes pay less usually except in Santiago but that won't matter cause you need a special electronic tag that charges you, so don't lose any sleep over that one and ride on through with a BIG SMILE.

Try to go coastal, avoid the highways... You don't see much from the highway, if you like the gravel there are still lots to be had!

the peaje costs the same doesn't matter if you are traveling north or south.
There are peajes between Puerto Montt in the south and as far north as Copiapó.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
