Chilean Registration Papers & Selling
After one week of riding, and three months waiting to get my DR650 repaired, the bike is finally fixed!!! I bought the bike in Januray and now the registration papers (papeles al dia) have expired. I have the new ownership card (pardon) in my name and when I get the inspections, and change the other papers:
- Seguro Obligatorio
- Certificado de Revision Tecnica Clase B
- Certificado de Emisiones Contaminantes
- Permiso de Circulacion
These too will be in my name. I have been told by a couple of co-workers, that all of these things can be done at the same place. Is this true? Is there anything I should do in particular to get the bike ready for these inspections? Are these inspections tough to pass, or simply if the bike runs, the brakes work, and it has a functioning muffler, it is likely to pass?
Also I plan to sell the bike, and hopefully fairly quickly, as my plans have changed and need to take care of time sensitive family matters back in California. Any advice about selling a bike in Chile would be very helpful and appreciated
Thanks in advance
Matt

Hi Matt,
Have you read the post I made at?
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/south-and-central-america-mexico/steps-buying-used-bike-santiago-45637
You will need to go to one of the places licensed to conduct Revision Tecnicas, http://www.revisionestecnicas.cl/ (I went here) they are big garages solely for this purpose, just google to find a convenient one. They will check tires, braking, lights, exhaust etc. You will need reflectors on the front and back sides of the bike you can buy cheap stickers on Calle Lira). If the bike is in good nick it will pass. They will then issue you the Certificado de Revision Tecnica Clase B and the Certificado de Emisiones Contaminantes. If there are any problems you have up to 3 weeks (the date will be on the paperwork) to fix them and reapply at no extra cost.
This place will not be able to issue you the other paperwork you need.
Go to a Municipalidad (I recommend the one on Vitacura) there you can buy the Seguro Obligatorio. There are many places to buy this, but the Municipalidad was the cheapest when I bought mine. They will also issue you the Permiso de Circulacion. You then have papeles al dia.
To sell you will need the piece of paper given to you when you got your RUT. This has an expiration date on it, and if you plan to sell the bike after this date, you will need to go to the Servicio de Impuestos Internos that issued your RUT to collect your plastic card.
Obviously advertise on the internet, but I also had a lot of interest when I parked my bike on the pavement on Calle Lira with a big sign with the price and my phone number.
All this info is in the post I mentioned.
Good luck
