Technically no - but the reality is that you MAY be able to convince customs. Remember, as far as they are concerned, it's just a convenient or probably fabricated excuse to get away with something.
Remember the customs officers mantra - "Tthey're all scum, and they're all trying to get away with something! I just have to find out what it is!"

It's not usually difficult to find somewhere. Contact the various HU Communities - with over 275 Communities in 67 countries worldwide, there's bound to be one nearby. Also, lots of bike shops are happy to store a bike.

hello out there,
i'd like to update / supplement information i gave above:
procedures on the semi-official border crossing between bolivia and peru along the east shore of lake titicaca have changed, as there is no more exit stamp available at puerto acosta, so you have to get it in la paz! locals say, that this is possible. on the other side (peru), formalities are only possible in puno (according to local information).
another interesting detail:
on leaving bolivia at the copacabana border we dared to leave with a long expired customs paper. even better than in argentina years before, the officials saw it but did'nt care at all! now i believe, that once you're at the border and about to leave the country, you generelly should be able to pass without too much problems (2-0 for the no problem case!).
on entry near copacabana (bolivia-peru border) there was no computer system. so leaving peru without bike was no problem at all.
good luck

Hola amigos,
I asked the Chilean Custom about, and here is the official answer:
-----------------------------
SUBDIRECCION TECNICA
DEPARTAMENTO NORMATIVO
REGIMENES ESPECIALES
GOBIERNO DE CHILE
SERVICIO NACIONAL DE ADUANAS
OFICIO ORD. Nº /
REG: 140/16245-29.09.04
F. : 1704
____________________________________
DE : JEFE SUBDEPARTAMENTO REGIMENES ESPECIALES
A : SR. JOSE PEDRO ESPINOSA
a) Pasaporte.
Saluda atentamente a Ud.,
JSS7SGG.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
