It is possible and i just did it

I just did it 2 weeks ago with my peruvian vehicle in my name. You have to a resident to export it for you with your permission. Then you import it to Bolivia. Was quite easy at the Copacabana-Crossing. If you want more details, you may check my new Youtube-channel (subtitles are available as it is originally in german)
Skip to the end for the bordercrossing Process

Crossing Peru to Boliva with rented motor bike. How is it done?

Wow, I plan to buy a motorbike in Peru and cross into Bolivia. Been struggling to find how it can be done given the problems with Peru customs. And you have done it!! Wow.

I can't make out/understabd your youtube which you said had the details.

Please, please can you let me know the details. For a start, I don't even know how to find a local willing to help me export!

Thank you very much for your information.

Give Toby Shannon a call at Around the Block Moto in Huanuco. The method noted using a Peruvian national to get your moto across the border is what I heard worked. Toby may have a contact to help you get your moto across the border.

OK. Thanks. I am in touch with him. The recommendation is exit to Brazil rather than the southern borders. Thanks for your reply.

Why does Peru block non-nationals from crossing into Bolivia with a Peruvian motorcycle? Toby Shannon (charapashanperu) told me it was because many motorcycles are stolen in Peru and spirited to Bolivia. I saw a courtyard full of motorcycles at a police station in Cobija, Bolivia, just across the border from Brasileia, Brazil. I didn't ask, but I assume the bikes were stolen in Brazil and recovered in Bolivia.

If you REALLY want to take your Peruvian bike from Peru to Bolivia, I suggest crossing at the Iñapari, Peru / Assis Brasil, Brazil, border. I am a dual citizen of the US and Ireland. I took a Peruvian-plated motorcycle that I owned from Peru to Brazil in August 2023 - no issues. Either enter Bolivia at the Cobija, Bolivia / Brasileia, Brazil, border or go further east to the Guayaramerin, Bolivia / Guajará-Mirim, Brazil border. Once you are in Bolivia enjoy the Riberalta to Rurrenabaque road through north central Bolivia.

The bicyclist, levelo, posted he experience on the SA HUBB in January 2024.

"Riberalta to Rurrenabaque is paved all the way ( minus the last 5 kms out of Rib. and into Rurr. ). The tarmac is brand new, courtesy of the Chinese company that's been busy pouring it.
It is still a very, very quiet road though, sometimes less than a truck/car per hour
People are waiting for a bridge to be built on the Mamore River so that visitors/freight from Brazil can come into the country seamlessly."

Exit Peru

It is not permitted for a non resident to exit Peru on a Perubian bike.
It has nothing to do with entering another country.
It is a Perubian law from 2019.

Coming from a trade agreement between some countries.
It has nothing to do with stolen bikes.
Of course you have to prove that you are the owner to pass a border.
Or in some cases, a permission from the owner to use the bike.

If you in some way would be able to exit Peru.
Due to sleeping customs or customs doing something wrong or....
You have done something illegal.

You need to understand that a border crossing involves exit one county and enter another country. Two completely different processes.

So, since it is exit from Peru that is not allowed. I does not matter what country you plan to enter.

=
OK. There is a possible workaround that could work. That a Perubian resident exits Peru on you bike.
(Needs papers to show that he is allowed to do that. Since the bike is not his)

And then you enter with the the bike in the other country.

But you might run into problems when reentering Peru. How can you enter when you were to allowed to leave. And time limits and...

=

Start in Colombia instead. No problems.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
