Help/info required: shipping bike Cusco to Santiago
Hello
I am not a biker myself, but have been asked by a friend to help out. He was involved in a fairly hefty accident and is completely out of action for quite a while. He will probably be repatriated to the UK in the coming week. He has a BMW 650 GS which is being looked after about 150km from Cusco, Peru, at a private address. He needs it returned to the place it was hired from, back in Santiago, Chile. He will not be able to be there to receive it, but can nominate a friend to be there.
Can anyone advise on these questions?
1. How can shipping take place? Does anyone know of a freight company to do this? The bike can be dropped off in Cusco without any problems.
2. What paperwork would need to be completed, and what authorisation would my friend have to give, and how, given that my friend will not be there at any stage of the shipping.
There may well be other considerations that have been overlooked, so your comments would be welcome.
Many thanks
Soumo

transporting
hey Soumo
this might be of some help to you - I tried/am trying to send my bike with a cargo transport company here in Peru from Puno in the far east to Lima. The cargo company wanted the bike ownership papers (fotocopies should be fine) to accompany the bike and a passport id (fotocopy) of the person who is going to pick it up at the other end. Unfortunately they forgot to tell me that the Aduana form ( that temporary import form for your bike that you receive at the border of every country) was of vital importance and so the Aduana officials here consficated my bike off the truck. This seems ludricous as I wasn't sending the bike cross borders but hey - this is South America!
You or the cargo company will definitely have to sort out that Aduana form that your friend has from entering the country with the bike. You might have to go to the Aduana in Cusco and get them to complete that form ( the exiting of the country with the bike) before you put the bike into the hands of the cargo transport company. Alternatively the cargo company/driver will have to have this form and complete the process of 'signing' out the bike at the border/ Aduana checkpoints. There should be no problems at the Chilean side of the border as I imagine the bike is Chilean registered and so needs no import / Aduana form.
I dont think that you will need any authorisation from your friend in relation to shipping it as the bike ownership paper is probably in the name of the hire company in santiago. As for the Aduana paperwork- you might need authorisation from your friend as this piece of paperwork usually goes hand in hand with the passport holder.
Get in touch with the company who hired the moto to your friend - they must have experience of this too.
As a rough price guide I have a transport company trucking my bike the 1200kms to Lima for 150 soles which is a good price. Loads of companies in the yellow pages - ring around for best price.
Take it for certain that the transport company don't have a clue, I should have posted something similar to this before I got stuck in all of this!
After you sort out the transport company and price and date of departure dont consider the task complete. Call back the next day(s) and make sure the bike has gone - it might well be still sitting there in the corner that you left it in - ( dont ask!)
hope this is some help - best of luck

Easiest way will be for your friend (who I hope isnt seriously hurt) to go to a notaria - they will produce a document explaining that the bike is being returned to its owners in Chile cos he's injured etc and stamp it to make it official. Make sure you get several copies of it.
When the bike leaves Peru the Aduana document has to be turned in - usually they just want to see the bike & check the reg etc. The notarised document will explain why the person who imported it isnt there.
Getting a Chilean bike into Chile shouldnt be a problem but the ownership documents should be with it etc, explaining to the hire company how one of their toys got mangled will be a different matter.
Hope that helps
