Yeah buying a local works in some situations not others. It's less good when travelling two up with camping gear, and when you're flying/starting in a country where you can't buy a local bike
Travelling solo with plenty of time then it's probably the best bet. Just need to know what you might be getting and put together a suitable toolkit and spares for it. Especially when travelling to remote areas.
Loads of Chinese bikes around here, some even look pretty good, but I wouldn't take one places I've been deep into the Atacama, or Altiplano. Now the Honda's 150s on the other hand could be decent buy.
