Honduras/Nicaragua Borders

I'm going across to Nicaragua from Honduras tommorow evening. Any suggestions as to the best crossing point?

I used the northern point (road goes to Estreli I think)- it took less than 2 hours. I am told that the road is in better condition than the southern one favoured by those coming straight from El Salvador.

Hope this helps!

Hey Ian,

How is it?

Never heard of any problems getting out of Honduras (only getting in), nor getting into Nicaragua. Usual complicated process made easier by tramitadors. There's compulsory insurance ($15 or so) that some riders like to bitch about, but everyone pays. I crossed by Esteli - easy as you like.

Cheers, Dan Walsh

One other thought on this one following Dan's mail. The insurance can be paid in local currency or US dollars but I remember the saving was pretty significant in local currency.

Probably too late for you Ian but maybe good for someone else.

Dan, have you tried contacting the Quito Community, especially Ricardo to see if he can help? This seems ridiculous, and we are currently getting some action from the government on the Carnet inconsistencies problem - see http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/cou...or/protest.php to add your name to the protest - so perhaps this too can be sorted out.

This turned out to be a bad one.. lots of money required because.. well any reason they could think of really. Locals in managua tell me it´s known for this... they use either of the other two crossing points...

You must have been lucky Matt!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
