I could use some advice. I'm from the States, and got hit in Peru. Here are the details.

I was heading out of Cusco when a car pulled out in front of me and took me out. It was entirely their fault. The front end of the bike (at least) is destroyed. The car was totalled. I got off light with a shattered ankle. I flew back to California for surgery and left my trusty 2001 KLR behind. It had been a wonderful 8 months ride.

So I got through surgery and all is going well with the recovery. The downside is, while doing that, my SUNAT temporary (Peruvian) title expired. So now I am facing some fees for that. I don't intend on going back to fix the bike. So here are the questions.... 1) has anyone just left a bike behind and not done any local Peruvian paperwork to clean things up?
2) If that is the route I take, do you think I would be able to ride into Peru in the future on another bike, do you think Customs would allow it?
3) How well are Immigration and Customs linked? Do you think I would be able to travel in Peru in the future and not have any flags go off when I enter the country?
4) Anyone in Cusco want some KLR parts? If so, perhaps you could help me by being my representative in freeing the bike? It is currently stored at a Comisaria/ Police Station.

Sorry to hear your story, I'm happy you are more or less fine.

About your question:
1) no, I never didn't
2) I'm not a lawyer so I've no clue. When your bike overstay the temporal import, the custom can collect your bike. When you want the bike back you have to pay a fee. What I heard it's really expencive.

3) The bike is not registred on your passport.In Argentina and Chile they do. So the Peruian immigration probably doesn't know about your bike.

My advice: clean it up it souldn't be a big deal. What you need is a policereport that say that your bike is destroyed and can't leave the country anymore. With this report you go to the custom and delete the temporal import. Maybe the custom will see your bike. Maybe after that you can sell it to a mechanics for spear parts.

Don't assume that the Peruvian authorities don't read m/c travel forums. It might be useful disappear some parts of your post should you decide to just abandon the bike.

The is a very good chance that the bike has already been sold off to raise revenue for the police/government.
All I know is that the number plate is stored in the computer so that would flag up. I'd just try to re enter on another bike and a new passport with a new passport number.

I've lived in Peru for 30 years and I think Kito has it nailed! "Lose" your passport and apply for a new one and you are good to go.

And NO, the Peruvian police do NOT read any of this blog! I know moto tour operators in Peru that don't even read it!

The exit of your vehicle from the country shall be allowed upon opinion of customs authority without prejudice of the Treasury or your vehicle´s destruction at your expenses."
