Insurance for Central & South America
Insurance for Central & South America
In October myself and 3 friends are riding from San Francisco to Argentina
This is very close and it is now time to start thinking about insurance for our bikes. We are a mixed bunch from England, Australia, Thailand and the USA, but all our bikes have been purchased in the US.
If anyone has any tips this would be much appreciated. So far I found this site:
Motorcycle Express - Ship Your Bike
This site outlines a policy with Michael I Mandell inc, has anyone taken out this policy or know of another? It looks okay but it excludes primary liability in Mexico, Belize, Columbia, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, I understand we can organise insurance for Mexico before we depart and it can be bought on the border in Belize,Costa Rica and Nicaragua - is this correct?
But what about Columbia?
Also we are still deciding if we should go fully comprehensive or liablility only?

Insurance Mercosur (Arg, Cl, Uru, Py, Brazil, Bol)
For these countries you can contact Roby Speiser <roby[at]speiserseguros.com.ar> in Buenos Aires. 3rd party liability only. I organized it while still in Europe. Premium was about US$ 300/12 months for a one-year-old BMW R1200GSA.
Don't know much about the countries north, I'm in the process of sorting that out right now.
Cheers from Bolivia!

You can indeed buy liability insurance at the border for Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Belize. In fact, I believe that it's actually mandatory to buy their insurance. I don't believe other insurance policies are accepted for liability in those countries.
Mexican insurance can be purchased online from many different agents, but it must be underwritten by a Mexican insurance company. Insurance policies issued by companies outside of Mexico are not valid in Mexico.

Hi,
for your insurance for South and Central America try this side: Motorcycle Express - Ship Your Bike this insurance is for all South and Central America exept Colombia. For Colombia you can get an insurance from 2 companies: SURA and SOAT. You can get it in a lot of offices and at some gas stations I was told.
good luck
Peter

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
