Hi Everyone,
I went for a drive into the Andes, through El Cajon del Maipo, in a 4 x 4 ( booooo, I hear you say) and I thought that if you had some time to kill around Santiago you might be interested in getting out of the city for a while - a minimum of two days is needed.
I have attached a Google Earth kmz file of the route, which ends up at the Termas de Plomo, a hot spring surrounded by 5000 meter high peaks a really lovely place - avoid weekends though or choose the quieter area.
GPS Co ords - which with a really basic map is all you need.
Main junction - GPS, 33deg 47′ 32″ S, 70deg 13′ 19″ W
Reservior campsite - GPS, 33deg 28′ 24″ S 70deg 01′ 55″W
Quieter area near thermals – GPS, 33deg 37′ 48″ S 69deg 55′ 15″W
The thermals – GPS, 33deg 37′ 04″ S 69deg 54′ 39″W
Unfortunately it is a 'one track there and back' type of drive. Not too demanding on the machinery either.
The adventurous among you will just head on out after seeing the kmz file and the gps co-ordinates, others might be interested in the full article we did.
