iPhone charging on motorbike? (Santiago)
Hey folks,

Posted in this forum since I need a solution available in Chile, otherwise might have to purchase a dedicated GPS (which can be bought here).

Am looking for a way to charge my iPhone on a Honda CG125. I'm presuming something fixed onto the battery in some way will be the solution, and figure there must be someone/somewhere in Santiago who can do it, just need to be pointed in their direction. Am hoping someone has had this done for them previously...?

Or do I have any other solution of charging while mobile?

Hi,

Whats the problem?...get the 12 Volt Carplug from Apple and install one of the cheap chinese 12Volt Cigarette plugs onto your bike. Finished. If its really a good idea to spend more money on a phone then on the bike is a different question...

I just have a car cigarette lighter socket wired directly (via a fuse) to the battery on the bike and then use a standard car charger for the phone.
So long as your battery is 12v you should be OK. A phone charger draws very little current.

Put a plastic bag over your phone? If you want a dedicated motorcycle GPS (waterproof and a resistive touchscreen that works when you're wearing gloves) I can point you somewhere in Santiago where they have them in stock but I warn you, those things aren't cheap.

It's not the phone that's the issue, I got that sorted, it's the cigarette lighter socket. I talked to an electrician about the issue, he was not able to find one that was waterproof.

If I go the dedicated GPS route, I'll buy from mercadolibre.cl, but would be fine with iPhone if I can sort charger out.

My socket isn't waterproof either. It does have a cap covering the socket but behind that it's just spade connectors and wires to the battery. I do have an inline fuse holder just in case of a short circuit but it hasn't given me any trouble so far and I've ridden in some seriously wet weather.

Same as the gentleman above, my lighter socket has been through some serious downpours in the past five years, and still works whenever I plug something into it. If you're worried get a roll of electrical tape and wrap it all around. Easy.

Instead of finding a socket that is already waterproof, make one waterproof yourself.
Duct tape, resin, plastic bag and tie wraps....
All sorts of ways for a creative rider to do it.
Here is one setup, but I am sure there are simpler ways to do it.

Of course, I have a fairing to mount the thing. You may want to try something more like what Vorteks has done:


Wiring the thing up is simple. Just wires to the battery, an inline fuse just in case and whatever tape/plastic bags/cable ties you need to keep the weather off. If a ham fisted chimp like myself can wire one up in an hour then it shouldn't pose any problem to either do it yourself or find someone to do it for you.

USB Port From Battery Tender Quick Disconnect (Waterproof)
A company called ZootFresh (zootfresh.com) has a neat device. It attached to my battery tender and I charge my iphone. It's easy enough to "install". I just use it and throw the phone into my bag while it charges (stopped or riding). For me, it's really just a back up anyway in case my iphone battery is dead or dying.
