K&N Air Filter Oil in Santiago or Mendoza?
Hi
Does anybody know if I can get K&N air filter cleaner and oil in either of the above cities, and if so where?
If not, are there any alternatives I can use?
As ever, any help much appreciated.
Cheers
Nick

Hi Nick & Jill
Are you still around here?
I guess see you again!
There are others alternatives, use a bucket whit some gas, then change for water and detergent, and finally rinsing whit clear water and let it dry. If still dirty you can repeat the process. Then you can use some oil (the optimum is any “air filter oil” or any very light).
All the K&N products are the same but whit the K&N sticker only to take your money; also the filter is only made whit a cotton cloth. I send to made my own “K&N” filter here for $ 60.-(Pesos) and work very well!!!
Hugs
Javier…

i agree with Javier. We,ve been cleaning ours with detergent and water and oiling it with a light air filter oil. It{s been working fine!
But watch out with some of these detergents... the cotton inside is quite sensitive.. last time i used a too agressive detergent and made some holes in the stuff and could throw the whole filter away ;(
Cheers

I rode 30,000 miles in South America with a K&N and cleaned it with detergent and oiled it with K&N Oil and it was fine ... until the end.
Towards the end of the ride in Brazil and Venezuela I couldn't go much more than 700 miles before the bike would shut down from dirty air filter. Once it was cleaned OK for another 700 miles but pain in the arse, obviously. Tried gasoline once, no better.
Flew bike and self from Caracas to Miami, found some K&N Cleaner, and voila ... !! ... rode 5000 more miles around the U.S. and no more problems. Go figure.
For long overland travel I would clean with detergent and carry one container of K&N Cleaner, for use if the problem developed.

I'd recommend against K&N period, mainly because of above-noted hassle, but also because it's not the best filter for off-road.
A foam filter works terrific - ALL off-road bikes use them - and they can easily be cleaned completely with petrol/gasoline and soap and water for a final clean, then oiled with foam air filter oil - 1/2 a film can per oiling - or any motor oil will work wellwhen you run out.
Search the HUBB for "foam filter" and you'll find lots on the subject, including one looong thread on filters generally.
Note for airhead BMW's, the standard pancake paper filter can be converted easily to a foam filter - mine is still working fine, since new.
KISS principle...

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
