PS. as i clearly know diddly squat, i can only speak from what others have told me: if you have a bike which only has a side stand and you want to get the front wheel off the ground, then put a alli pannier/ wooden log/ pile of bricks or whatever under the engine. magic.
to get old bearings out... heat up the offending area (camping stove/ somebody else's kitchen stove??) take one hammer, and one tyre lever/ screw driver or similar, bang bang bang and hey presto....
in order to get the remains of a bearing off a spline... try an angle grinder or lathe. you're unlikely to have one of these with you, but you'd be (un)surprised as to how many mechanics/ engineering shops have one of these...
