Ardechois,
Just a thought, man. I'm riding north from Chile to Colombia with my girlfriend. I am on a Tenere 660, but she is on a DR200 and doing just fine. If you can't find a KLR or Beemer, don't overlook a smaller bike. I've met several guys on 250 Honda Tornados, having a blast on the dirt roads. And you find Tornados everywhere so easy to maintain. Tonnes of them second hand in Santiago.
Stay in the mountains in Peru - amazing riding / scenery / people.

Yeah buying a locally made bike can be a good option. The Tornado 250 or Honda 400NX are probably the most popular, but the 300XR and Suzuki DR series would do equally as well. All of these accept the Suzuki are relatively common in many latin American countries. Given parts are easy to source, and buying in Santiago fairly simple, I'd recommend this unless you have your heart set on a bigger bike.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
