Overstaying Brazilian Motorcycle Visa?
Hello There
Can someone please help with my query - based upon 2014!
I am a British citizen and in 2011 rode my Honda XR 650 L from Los Angeles to Rio de Janeiro - across 15countries. It is a US registered bike.
I returned home in August 2011 and left the bike stored in Sao Paulo with a friend l met there during my trip.
My original visa allowed me to stay 90 days which would have been October 2011, but thats like 2.5years ago...
I would like to ride south to Patagonia and maybe north to Venezuela.
If l cross any of the borders and explain that the visa ran out 2.5years ago and l left the country and came back to take the bike back to the USA - how would that go down with the border Police?
I dont want a fine that will cripple my trip savings and dont want anytime in a Brazilian prison. Just want a clean exit into a new country...
What advice can anyone give me? Bets border routes, explanation on why l overstayed....
I want to leave in the next few weeks - so any thoughts would be appreciated...

No TIP in Brazil
Hi Danny,
you are lucky, there is no more Temp. Import Permit for vehicles into Brazil. So you can leave at any border with the bike and do the TIP in the next country. If you dont believe me, please confirm with Rod from Bikershelpdesk in Foz, you will find him here on the HUBB somewhere.

Mika is right, crossed into Brazil yesterday from venezuela, and double checked with the brazilian border police. No TIP, nada. Just your own stamp in the passport, just like a backpacker or bus passenger at the border.

Are you both serious??
I can fly back to brazil from the UK and ride my US bike (with all paper work) and take her back to the US and enjoy the journey??
No Police problems, huge fines and prison cells - a can really do this??

yes, we are serious. Enjoy your trip up North, but as far as I know all other countries on your route still have the TIP system.

Well, this theory is yet to be tested so I wouldn't rely on these assurances too much. One thing to drive into Brazil, leave the vehicle behind and fly home again as a few people have done recently, but it is not proven that 10 out of 10 of these people will be able to return and drive out without problems.
I hope it is true but ....

I will investigate further and let you know how l get on and if l choose to head back to Sao Paulo and ride out of the country and make it - l will be sure to update...

Here l am getting excited thinking l can fly from the UK to Sao Paulo, collect my motorbike and ride across the Argentinian Border...
I just recognised that my USA Certificate of Title expired February 2012 - 2years ago!!
This would need renewing in the USA right? Or, as long as the title matches the bike engine, chssi numbers - l can still ride through central and south america countries as the Title is only valid in the USA?
Apologies - what a bugger - any thoughts would be appreciated...
I would potentially ride from Sao Paulo into Argentina an south to Ushuaia. The head north through Chile and across Bolivia and head out for the East coast of Brazil towards french guiana, suriname and into Venezuela where l would try and ship the bike to Cuba and into Florida and then ride across the USA.
Once in the USA - l can register ...
Any last ditch thoughts would be appreciated...

I didn't know a title of ownership expires. I believe you mean the "registration" expired, an item that needs to be renewed annually. You will want to renew your registration, because that will be the only US document that has the license plate number on it. Your name and the license plate number on registration links to the title of ownership, proving you own the bike with that license plate...
Depending on the state in the US, you might have some challenges renewing the registration by mail. Check to see if the registration can be renewed online. My state has this service. Chance are you'll need a local address to have the card mailed, but I assume you know someone in the US.

Thanks and Yes thats correct - the certificate of title has an annual expiration date on the registration and needs to be renewed.
- The bikes in Sao Paulo, brazil.
- The State where registration needs to be completed is California.
- I am based in the UK - so will check online
Then have it sent to a US address and mailed to the UK before l depart to Brazil. Seems best way?

Not that I condone it, but I reckon half the travellers' vehicles in South America have expired registration papers simply because there are annual inspections required - eg TUV, pink slip inspections, MOT and in the case of California, annual smog and mechanical inspections and without those, registrations just can't be renewed. Certificates of title then become the document of choice at border posts since mostly they are looking for vehicle details to enter on the TIP and rarely look at registration expiry dates.
One tip for travellers is to get all the required data - personal and vehicle - typed out neatly with English, Spanish and Portuguese translations of the headings and present that to the official behind the desk while having the originals in a folder if needed. This saves them a heap of time searching through the papers with unfamiliar layouts to find VINs and vehicle models and types.
Couple of times I have been handed the blank TIP and asked to fill it in myself so whatever you can do to make their life easier will be appreciated.
BTW, wouldn't Cuba be a bad choice for shipping anything to the US

I thought just the same - so many bikes and vehicles in south america that the registration docs must have expired for many. But l have all the bikes paper work and when l get back to the US will re-register the bike...
Yes - Cuba aint the place to ship to the US.......so maybe ship the bike from venezuela to florida and l will fly to puerto rico and onto cuba and meet the bike in florida...

Hi Danny,
can you please confirm that there are no temp permit required for Brasil anymore once you've passed the border?
I have a place I can leave my bike in Brasil but was struggling with the 90 days

No TIP required for Brazil!

It appears that the TIP visa for Brazil is no longer required. I am checking this out with a guy call Rod from Bikers Help Desk in Brazil.
