make sure if you need a carnet de passage or not in order to LEAVE Peru with a peruvian vehicle. I needed one (some years ago though) and was not allowed to cross the border and had to return to Lima. At the Touring y Automovil Club del Peru. A deposit of US$4000 was needed. This strange rule is because the SUNAT (peruvian customs) wants to be sure you bring back the vehicle (otherwise you have to pay exportduties)

hi, thanks
we asked president of the peruvian automovilclub - no problem
but better to cross to chile than to bolvia directly going south
(on the peru-bolivia border still need import letter)
for non peruvian registrations no problem anywhere
go where you want without carnet or other papers

Hi, we have crossed Peru - Chile border on the bikes with Peruvian plates. Custom guys, nice what was a big surprise to us, advised to say that we are going to stay aoutside Peru only 30 days and then come back. If more then you need some kind of export doc, they do not have it here, and what the hell - all we know that you are not going to come back but say this to spare problems, so we said, so they smiled and wished good luck on the road. Also added that if we do not come back no sanctions. Clear. Specially that we will not planning to come back to Peru next 5 years

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
