Questions over bike paperwork into Buenos Aires?
Good morning everyone.
My plans to get from Cape Town to Buenos Aires are almost complete. I am sure the shipping is sorted and I have the address of the warehouse where the bike should end up. Once it is there I have three days to get the importation paperwork sorted and then the bike released. After that I will be charged storage on a daily rate.
I expect to be in Buenos Aires a few days before the bike to try and get everything in place to release the bike. I have already contacted Sandra at Dakar Motors and have a quote for their services. However I am looking to save money and would like if possible to sort the import of the bike myself. All the port charges are taken care of so it is just the import process and insurance I need to sort. I believe South American insurance is grouped in the same way African insurance is with the Brown and Yellow card systems. Certain countries held under one policy to allow travel between them.
So my questions are; Has anyone done the TIP process for a shipped bike? I understand it is not too much hassle at the land borders, is it a realistic thing for me to achieve myself? And does anyone have any information on motorcycle insurance for South America?
Any comments, experiences and thought would be appreciated.
Cheers Zed.
