Quito help!

hey all

I have tried every moto and bearing shop in Quito Ecuador and its not possible to get this starter clutch 1VJ-15590-00 or the two cylindrical bearings for the starter Gear 93310-530R5 (yamaha 3Aj 89 tenere). I rang the biggest yamaha parts store in Chile and they would need to import it from japan - 30 days. Yamaha Colombia is getting back to me in the morning but I dont think they will have it if Santiago Chile doesnt. I have only about 30 days left in south America . .

I have tried to find these parts online in the states but all the sites I find only seem to have kickstart xt600 parts - does anybody know if the starter clutch for electric start xt600s/teneres 1986 - 1990 are available in the states ?

The parts are available in england and holland but apart from being crazy expensive I am not sure if they will ship from there - alot of companies wont ship because so much goes missing here - is it different/safer with courier - anybody ever get parts shipped/couriered over here from europe before?

Finally ... is there maybe anyone out there who might have an old/seized/broken/spare engine of this kind who would be willing to pull and ship me the starter clutch and bearings?

running out of ideas ... any new ones most welcome ..

Don,t mess about mate order them up from Britain in the morning,in the mean time talk to my old mate Hector Lopez,he,s a metalwork genious with his own workshop in Quito,he may be able to cobble something together to get you going.I,m Albert by the way I own the turtles head pub in Quito and I reasonably well know on this site,you can phone Hector on 2 890 954 or he works for me at my other pub Busters across the road from Quicentro,I,ll be back in Quito on Sunday If I can be any help,but give Hector a try he,s a topman and can perhaps even make a new part!!! miracles can happen

I ruined my starting relay for my XT 600 in San Juan Argentina. The Yamaha mechanic took a relay from another bike and "surgeoned" it on the XT for 30 dollars parts and service.

May be the latin creativity would be a cheaper and faster option than getting original parts?

The USA never got a Tenere' model at all and ALL XT's were discontinued in 1990. Yamaha generally supply parts for 15 years after discontinuation, so expired too at this point.

I'm not even sure if the US XT's were elec. start or not?....all the ones I remember were kick only. Hmmm...but perhaps the last couple years were 'lectric start after all?

Any way, Albert's got it right. Call your best dealer in the UK, they'll have the parts on a plane in a day or two. (with luck) and perhaps someone there can help on getting them out of customs?

This is a good lesson on two counts:
#1. Always set up a Credit Card account with a friendly local dealer BEFORE your trip begins. One email and the parts needed are on the way to you....worry about paying the CC off later.

#2. Guys may think they got a real deal on that 20 year old XT....but
now you'll be paying for it. I spent a month in Quito during my six weeks in Ecuador....and after about two weeks I was ready to move on (couldn't due to work) A newer bike simply increases your odds that a break down won't ruin your trip. Pay it Forward!

The two companies in England who have access to this part would need to first order it in from Yamaha main distribution somewhere in europe, one wont ship here period and the other only to the home address of the credit card!! Go figure?
A crowd in holland will order it in and will ship here, 2 weeks in minimum if I buy it this Monday morning Holland time..

A great organisation called XT600 club Brasil found me a shop in Sao Paulo with the part sitting on the shelf! But this shop wont take payment over the fone or online with credit card! Or western Union. Need to be there to buy it in person or lodge the money into their brasilian bank - god knows how many days that would take to clear ...
So i gotta make the call this night - if i cant find anyone in sao paulo to go in with the western union cash i could wire them then i gotta sit on my hands for minimum 2 weeks until the holland package comes thru ...

any sao paulo suggestions most welcome, tried the community but no joy ...

You might want to try Speedy Motos (I think) in Quito. Right next to a huge roundabout near the airport- Albert will know where. When my girlfriend needed a new air filter for her KLR, we searched every damn shop in that town, including the Kawa place all to no avail. No one had one. I went back to Speedy's for something else and lo and behold, he casually produced a brand new KLR air filter saying, "oh yeah, I found this in the back".

The German mechanic there was really helpful and knowledgable too. After the Kwak dealer's mechanic gave up trying to get the front sprocket bolt off the KLR (he had the security guard bouncing up and down on a huge spanner), he was seriously suggesting we follow him after work to his 'pappys' house because his pappy (dad) would know how to get the bolt off. The German guy at Speedy had it off in seconds.

I bought my first XTE in 93 in South Carolina for my north american tour. This was a 92 version (with electric start), so i m fairly surprised about your dates...:confused1:
