History:
I bought my bike in summer 2015 in Los Angeles, USA for my trip across Latin America. It
meant to be 8 month journey covering 30 000 km. And I’m almost there!
The bike’s first owner treated the V-Strom really well – USA trips only, asphalt, garage, service
– he adored this bike. When came to me, it was in exceptional condition.- During my trip I always used rain/sun cover and maintained the bike really accurate and
often. 95% of my trip was on asphalt.
- I fell 2 times, both at low speed, one on sand, which resulted in few scratches on the safety
bars and pannier, broken horn (currently it is missing, but will try to buy it soon), rear turn
signal. Front right turn signal is also missing because of the fall during parking.
- I changed oil+filter every 5000 km. Always used fully synthetic oil, and always of a good
quality (Motul, Mobil).
- I cleaned-lubed my chain every 500 km or each time after rain or dusty roads. I installed a
new chain in Merida, Mexico (DID X-ring 525) and it’s still in perfect condition!
- Air filter and spark plugs were changed 7000 km ago. Road conditions after that were good
(Chile, Argentina) – no dust, no sand. Filter should be in like new condition.
- Just now I replaced rear tire for $200, and it will have <3000 km mileage on it. I changed the
bearing with the Japanese original as well. Front tire is good to run 10-13k km more.
So, in general, it’s a perfect bike to ride short or long distances. Safe and smooth. It’s not the
best off-road choice, but will work there as well (I did it ok). Giant panniers will give you a
chance to bring everything you want with you (I rode with my friend and all his stuff for a long
time).
V-twin is a really stable and robust engine that can reliably work up to 300k km, so 80k km is
negligible with the good maintenance, which was done. I did not have a SINGLE problem with
engine or transmission in my whole trip! It is solid as a rock.
Yes, motorcycle has its cosmetic issues – little scratches, rusty screws, worn plastic
somewhere. But it’s a working horse – I use it for travel and it’s doing its job! In addition, it’s
hard to keep the look perfect in the 8-month journey abroad)
If you got some questions or interested - please send me email. I check it everytime)
