San Cristobel to Palenque road washed away today.
San Cristobel de Las Casas to Palenque road closed. (Mexico)
Earlier today (Dec. 1st) I was on the main road from San Cristobel to Palenque (in pouring rain all day). Just 20 miles short of Palenque the road had been totally washed away. About 10 meters of it just gone an hour befoer I got there. (I have a photo and will try to add it tomorrow).
The road certainly won't be open again for a while. However it is possible to detour. About 20-30 miles before Palenque there is a large fork in the road. Turn left to head for Salto de Agua. This road then leads to the 186 where you turn right for half an hour before turning right again for Palenque. Total disatnce from San C, about 200KM. The road to Salto de Agua is tricky. Lots of potholes and bits washed a way but manageable. Mind you there has been so much rain anything could happen. The river that runs along the 199 has totally broken its banks and there is substantial flooding (but not on the road yet.)
I'm in Palenque and its been raining none stop for well over 24 hours.

Nice pictures ,especially the lower one.The guy standing on the edge could quite litterally have been standing on the edge! Judging by the crack in the pavement just left of his feet he could have been standing on a lip of only asphalt which might have been ready to collapse... ... just like the flopped flap on the other side of the gully.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
