Selling Advice - Any Chilean Paperwork Experts ?
Hi HUBB biker friends,
I need some advice on SELLING my CHILEAN bike in CHILE please:
I have advertised my bike for sale in Chile and I have had an offer, without any questions about the condition of the bike itself.
The buyer wants to do a PayPal payment to me immediately. Then he wants to send a shipping agent to pick the bike up from my address.
Does this sound legitimate?
I would like to sell legally and transfer the papers to new owner. I have to go WITH THE BUYER to the Notaria and Registro though don't I?
Thanks.

Cash only, or assume you're dealing with a scammer. In this case, be certain.
If you think this might be genuine, tell him to Paypal the money to his "shipping agent," who can then deliver cash directly to you....before taking the bike. Stand back and watch him disappear at the suggestion.

I see. Thought an advance paypal transfer would be quite a secure thing, non-reversible.
Thanks markharf for the advice.

You don't have to know how a scam works to recognize that it is, in fact, a scam. Just ask any of the folks who've accepted certified or bank checks in payment for Craigslist merchandise. You recognize a scam by the simple fact that no one is showing up at your door with a pile of actual cold hard cash to exchange for your stuff. They can give you lots of reasons for how they want to do things....but still no cash waiting on your doorstep.
Edit to add: Again, I'm not determined to prove myself correct. If the cash exists, the "buyer" can get it to his "shipper" who can hand it over to you. Simple. That's what you'd do if purchasing a bike, right? You'd hand someone cash and they'd give you the bike.
Good luck.
Mark

Mark has the scam element covered.
Having been through the buying and transfering process in Chile earlier this year I know that the buyer and seller are meant to both be present at the registration office together to get the details changed.
How would your buyer be handling that ?
This now reminds me, my mechanic in true Chilean style has forgotten about the bike left standing in the back of his garage and has not sold it for me yet.
Anyone need a Funduro ? :-)

Hi markharf,
Thanks for the advice and hat off to your commonsense. You have a nose for this.
I am now certain that this is a scam. I emailed the buyer with a paypal account name, but did not confirm that I wanted to a deal, rather asked about how we would fulfil certain conditions like doing the legal paperwork.
I received a reply today stating that the payment had been sent to me including an additional 700USD to be Western Union'ed to his agent, upon which the 'held' paypal payment would be cleared.
I have in my JUNK box an email supposedly from PayPal (should go directly into my inbox) saying I have been paid. The email when examined shows it's been sent from a gmail account ON BEHALF on paypal.
PayPal's FRAUD support FAQ says that they ALWAYS address customers by their first and last name or business name, NOT "generic greeting like ‘Dear user’ or ‘Hello, PayPal member."
The email with my "payment" opens with: "Dear PayPal User..."
I have replied as you suggested:
1. When I arrive in Santiago, Chile I will confirm my address to you.
2. Please wire or PayPal all the money to your shipping agent.
3. Your shipping agent will deliver the money to me, cash USD, and he and I can proceed with the necessary paperwork to transfer deeds on the same day.
4. Upon receipt of cash and completion of paperwork, I will hand over the bike, keys and documents to your agent.
Thanks again Mark. I will post the full emails as soon as I have time so others can benefit...

Since the guy was a scammer
I am in the market for a bike right now and I've seen your ad multiple times once on here and a couple times on chileautos.cl (I think). I am legitimately interesting if you haven't already found another buyer. I can't PM yet since I'm a new user, but I think I already posted my contact info in your post for selling the bike (which I can't seem to find now).

Note to the admins: maybe possible to rename this thread to something like "Selling Motorbike - Is it a Buyer SCAM? (Chile)"
Seems more sensible.
