Shiping bikes to Quito
After our Cape to Cairo trip our group, the "MICMABS", are planning to go to South America this October.
Some advice please.
We are sending our bikes (4 x BMW 650GS and 2 x 650 Dakars) by sea in a 20ft container to Guayaduil and we intend to fly to Quito.
Should we collect our bikes from the port at Guayaduil or is there somewhere in Quito where the container could be delivered?
I also read with interest JamesCo's reply to TerryMoto on the 20th March 2004 as we intend not to use a Carnet. We want to leave the bikes in store in Santiago and return next year to finish our trip via Tierra del Fuego to Rio.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Recently passed thru Ecuador from Colombia on KLR650.
Don't think you'd want to pay for container from Guayaquil to Quito. Better to take bus from Quito. Subject of Carnet never came up on entering or leaving Ecuador(or any other country). I flew bike from Panama to Bogota. No problems!--Porter

Can concur on the Carnet front, nobody asked for one in Equador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile or Argentina, very very glad I did not invest in one for this trip - as I´m a bit short of cash now and would be even shorter of sponds if I had bought a CdP.
Cool and the gang

Shipping to Guayacill? Christ. Er, email me for grisly details. It's taken me over two months to get a chain and sprocket released from Guayacil customs.
The Carnet situation is NOT cut and dry, no matter what some people post on here. Officially, some customs officers still believe a carnet is necessary. I've had ongoing problems...
As I said, email me for details.
Cheers, Dan Walsh.

From what I've heard- it's best to ship via plane to Quito. Most people dont have much trouble that way. And if you do, Ricardo Rocco lives in Quito and can help you out. Probably worth the money to fly rather than boat.
I will be in Ecuador from middle of October to middle of November- racing the Vuelta rally agin in Oct then riding Ricardo's Caravana in November. Try to watch/race the rally and/or join the Caravana- big stupid 2 wheel fun!!!

On my way from California to Tierra del Fuego
I crossed the border into Ecuador from Colombia. No carnet was required. Only in Peru and Bolivia they asked for it but as I told them that I don't have one it was also no problem.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
