Shipping from Oz to Chile

I have shipped my KLR from Perth to Valparaiso-Chile recently, and the guy from the shipping company has just informed me that to clear my bike from customs there i need to obtain a fiscal identification number or "CNJP" and also something called a "NCM".He says i need to contact customs in Santiago or Valparaiso to get these things.
I've shipped and flown bikes around a bit in the past but never to Chile so i've never come across this one before! From what i have read it seems a piece of cake to ship to Chile but this has thrown me a little as my bike has already left port.

If there is anyone out there who has come across this or just knows about these things...your input would be greatly welcomed!Cheers.

The answer ( I suggest you Google Translator):

Sr. Jose Pedro Espinosa:

Saludos cordiales,

Ana María García

Let's give luck a real chance....

liam79, HI, I am a membber of the HUBB Buenos Aires community... and just read the responce to DiasDePlaya's question to the Aduana in Valpariso, Chile.

The answer is actually a non answer and you have every right to be confused.

Here is my translation of the response to: Jose Pedro Espinosa

"Someone wrote to me in English, without the identifying data needed so I can respond.

In the first paragraph a question was asked about a motorcycle and the identification of the motorcycle was provided, and then in the second paragraph there was a comment regarding bicycles that had been admitted into Chile in the past.

If you would like, please refer the person who wrote me, without giving a first or last name, to (Servicio Nacional de Aduanas - Gono de Chile) and to consult directly by filling out the proper form with all aduana (customs) documentation that was utilized for the shipment from New Zealand to Chile.

I have no way of obtaining the needed data and therefore cannot help."

Saludos cordiales,

Ana María García
OIRS Aduana Valparaíso

If in the second paragraph of your original letter you did not mention "bicycles," apparently, the aduana is confusing another letter written in English with yours.

If you did mention bicycles, then I suggest you do go to the web page Ana suggested and fill out the form with all aduana data you used for the transport of your motorcycle to Chile.

Keep me posted and good luck

liam,

The problem was they confused bike with biclycle, that's all. Probably the person who answered don't speak English and used a translator, then the translator translated bike as motorcycle and in the second paragraph as bicycle and this is origin of the confusion.

But the message core is that you can write directly to them using the link to the Valparaiso Customs.

If you contact them include all the details, yours and numbers of any paper that you have.

Buying in Chile

I've been looking on some websites in Chile and it does not seem too be that much cheaper over there. It cost me $939 Aussie to ship from Fremantle to Valparaiso...not too bad i thought, and it seems i've got my problem sorted out now.I just contacted the shipping agent in Santiago and faxed them my bill of lading and they said they will clear it with customs etc etc.

Has anyone shipped from Brisbane or Sydney?

Anyone shipped from Brisbane or Sydney? Were machines crated? I am starting research for my proposed trip to South America and currently building my 'expedition' DRZ400
