Shipping parcels home to Canada/US from S.A.
We have collected too many Inka Kola tee-shirts and other misc goods and want to send a box home. Peru (where we are now) is obscenely expensive to ship things from. Was wondering is folks know if it gets any better from Chile, Bolivia, Brazil, or Arg.
Cheers,
Rene

Hi Rene, I sent 19kg via DHL to London, UK for about 200 dollars about 4 months ago from Peru. It was full of big old smelly alpalca hides that smell like dog blanket when they are wet. Must remember to get that sorted out. Otherwise people will think that I live in a caravan and work at easter fairs.
My 2p worth.

We shipped stuff all along the way, usually certified (for safety) and by boat (to keep the price down). The cheapest place is Argentina.
We don´t wait to have 19 kilos (!) of souvenirs before shipping them, but it is still best to wait to have 4 or 5 kilos and send one big package instead of several smaller ones.
Ask the prices at the post-office for different weights (2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 kilos). Sometimes it´s the same price for a given range (let´s say from 1 to 3 kilos, then from 3 to 5), so make sure you are not just 200 grams about the limit.
For now, all our packages arrived. Let´s knock some wood.

I have shipped from Bolivia, Barzil, and Ecuador, safely and cheaply, from the local post office- takes a while, but it gets there.

Whoa, old thread, but exactly what I am looking for!
I bought a full-sized bow and arrows from a Mayan kid at Palenque.
It´s about 5 feet or 1.5m long. too long to send via standard mail.
FedEx quoted $1140 pesos! Is there a better way to get it home or am I going to have to bite the bullet and pay up?
What about customs? There was no recipt given. Is there an exception for handicrafts/ cosas de artisenias?
I may be able to ship it to a friend in Baja, and have them bring it to the US and then send it to me in Canada...
Any tips would be appreciated!
Grant, how did you ship that huge African sculpture home? the one that broke...

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
