Shipping from VALPO to CAL has me over a barrel
Here is the abreviated version: a cargo agent quoted us $750US to ship the bike. When we got to his office and investigated crating, the quote jumped to $1200, but since we were flying soon, we agreed to pay the increase, but paid only for crating and customs broker on the spot, and would pay the rest once the bike had shipped. Well, two weeks ago, we were told the bike had shipped and our balance due is $2600. What the $hit!!! What is this all about!?!?! I could have shipped it home by air for much less! Now the cargo agent is saying the crate turned out bigger than he thought, and he won't release our Bill of Lading unless we pay up!
Any ideas what to do in this situation? I've been trying to rationalize and negotiate with this guy for the past two weeks and I've gotten no where. I feel like he has me over a barrel and won't let my bike out unless I pay the ransom!
All I have is the ship's name and date it is to arrive, all other info he has not released.
Is it at all possible for me to get the bike from the port without his help?
Any other ideas?
A real nightmare for sure.
Any advice appreciated...
