sorata, bolivia - situation
hello out there,
has anybody been in sorata recently (2004!)?
i heard about some kind of uprising going on there right after we left town in september 2003. there is not much to find about it on the web. last news say, that the police had been forced out of town and that other warlike things happened (shootings, roadblocks, lootings...).
it's very important for us, because unfortunately we stored our motorcycles there (and cannot make contact with the guy)!
thanks for your help

What happened in Sorata and Warisata (close) was the start of the october uprising that cost 60-80 lives, mostly in El Alto. The president was overthrown and the situation was pretty scary for several days.
If the person in charge of your doesn´t answer your pleas... I´d expect the worst. The region around Sorata has seen some really violent anti-gringo sentiments . Do you have any other contacts in La Paz that could go and take a look? Maybe contact Walter Nosiglia? Frank (who used to be an active contributor and was evacuated from La Paz during the clashes)
Hope the best

hello out there,
just to close this topic - maybe it's interesting for somebody else:
i mananged to talk to a local resident on a regular phone line. the situation in sorata (and bolivia in general) seems to have returned to normality. no problems at all for locals and tourist as well. not much seems to have happended; as always - the media described the situation much more grave that it eventually was.
good luck to everyone

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
