Thanks for all the advice...
Thanks everyone for all the good advice about the problem I had in colombia, the Doohickey thingamajig. For those of you who said I should've changed the thing before I left, I DID change it. The new one broke too!
I found an increadible mechanic in Ibague, Colombia whi had a new spring made. I opened up the engine to check out a new problem with the cam chain and the new doohickey spring is holding up perfectly.
With 25,000 miles now on the clock I'm hoping that these are just routine maintenence jobs. I've been riding the bike slowly which is making progress much slower than I would like, but at least it's progress in the right direction.
I'm off now to check on the bike. I'm in Lima and the bike is at Desert Honda which seems to be a good place for it.
Thanks again everyone for you advice and concern. I'll be much more careful of using the word 'help' and 'stranded' even though it was the case, I didn't mean to cause any undo worry or concern.
Jeff

yeah, unfortunately the aftermarket piece just shores up what is bad design, it is still a flaw. still you are pretty unlucky that it happened to you.
Do I understand you right that it is the spring not the piece that broke? Well at least that can be relatively easily replaced, glad to hear you are back on the road.

Give my regards to Roberto
Jeff,
Yes, you are in good hands there at Desert Honda. Roberto Belmonte is a long time enduro and dand dune climber, as well as an organizer of adventure tours and events. I have lived in Peru 25 years and done business with Roberto. What do you plan to see in Peru? I greatly encourage you to go to the interior, not just up and down the coast.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
