Timeline: Buying moto in Colombia

Good Evening! I'd like to purchase a new AKT 200TTR in Bogota in a few weeks. There are a lot of good reports on the process, but there is one part which is unclear. The timelines are not clearly defined, ultimately I am trying to determine how long from the time of purchase until you have your plate and all your papers so that you can exit Colombia towards Ecuador and places south.

We bought two AKT Adventour 250s from a dealer in Bogota back in October and you should expect to wait 2-3 days from when you pay for the bike to have it plated and the ownership card in your possession.

Don't pay for the bike unless they have the actual bike in the showroom and you do the paperwork for it. We had to wait 10 days for the actual bikes to be shipped to Bogota from Medellin since they were sold out nationally and their estimates for arrival were overly optimistic.

That said, we went to maybe 10 different AKT dealers and saw plenty of 200TTRs so you shouldn't have that problem. Our dealer had the bikes registered in Soacha, a suburb of Bogota, because it's apparently a quicker turnaround there. They will send the documents via courier so it just depends how efficient the courier is. Maybe express your urgency to the dealer to see if they can speed things up.

Also, if you're planning to go into Ecuador or further south I would definitely get any parts or tires sorted in Colombia since there's much greater availability and variety there.

Heres a link to our blog which may answer some other questions for you:

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
