Touring Bikes wanted Feb - April 2010
Hi all,
I've already spoken with Ed Xfiltrate who's been really helpful and suggested I post our query on HUBB.
So here goes:
Does anyone have a contact, or know a motorcycle dealer who may help us?
We are three experienced New Zealander motorcyclists looking to travel from central Chile, (Santiago, Chillan, or Osorno), to Ushuia, then back up to the same point in approximately 35/42 days (five/six weeks). We fly into Santiago on the 25th of February 2010.
We originally intended upon purchasing bikes to tour on, however, we have been told that purchasing and arranging a dealer to buy-back our motorcycles is a more cost effective alternative. There is a possibility that we would ferry down and drive back up, depending upon flexibility, and timing.
The dates we intend to travel are as follows:
- Depart: central Chile (i.e. Santiago): around 26 February 2010
- Arrive: back to central Chile (i.e. Santiago): early April 2010
We are flexible with our departure location, and are willing to travel (by bus etc) to any location which may have the bikes we need and at the right prices.
Motorcycle budget
We are willing to get new or used bikes, and are budgeting to pay between $3,000 - $3,500 USD ($1.5m - $1.7m chilean pesos). Again, we are flexible on bike type, but we are specifically looking for Enduro/Todo Terreno motorcycles (i.e. Kawasaki KLR, BMW GS/Dakar, Suzuki DR etc).
Paperwork assistance
Because we are working on a timeframe, we would require assistance in correctly completing the following paperwork:- Tax Identification Number (RUT) from an office of Servicio de Impuestos Internos;
- Contrato de Compra-Venta de Vehiculo (as foreign motorvehicle owner in Chile);
- Solicitud de Transferencia (advice regarding obtaining the Padron); and
- Seguro Obligatorio for Argentina only.
We would also require assitance getting full motorcycle insurance and any other adivice that you may be able to provide (i.e. mechanics and motorcycling contacts in lower Chile/Argentina).
We'd like to hear from you if you can help, or put us in contact with someone who can assist.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
