usa to ushuaia : oct/nov 2002 until july/august 2006

hello,

i m french, 25, my name is fred.

i will ship my bike from france (africa twin, transalp style) to usa or buy a bike in usa.

do you have any info on buying a bike in usa and/or shipping from europe to usa : where can the boat stop or the plane land ? any ideas, experience, comparisons ?

then, i ll drive south to ushuaia, in +/- 6 months time.

i m eventually looking for partner(s) on the way for short or long time, or for the whole trip.

i would appreciate also any info about administrative part of the trip : visa, carnet de passages en douane, insurance, dangers and annoyances, ...

this is my first travel on a bike and alone.

i can manage the bike part, know a bit about mechanic.

i am less at ease with the administrative part.

thanx a lot in advance, cheers

nb : thanx for vincent danna and jj baudorre for his kind help and to the french and other hubb communities who kindly replied me.

Hey Fred- I'm Dave- live in Colorado. I'm starting the same trip as you in October! Same time frame as well. Get in touch and we can talk- where do you plan on entering Mexico? I'm thinking of El Paso as that is the shortest way to the border for me- we could always meet up down the road. Bon Chance no matter what! Dave.

You both might want to try to hit the HU Meeting in Creel, Mexico Oct 11 - 14, 2005.

You'll get a chance to meet experienced travellers and learn a lot, as well as a great introduction to Mexico and awesome riding.

Details on the Meetings page, link on left.

See you there!

Hi Fred,

I have the same idea that mollydog. I have an Africa Twin as you.
Probably the best option for you is to buy a used Suzuki V-Strom. Is not as good as the Africa off road but is better on paved roads. And most of used bikes have a better windshield than the original that sucks.
Read the V-Strom specific forums to have a better idea.

If you go south by Chile send me an email. I will be happy to be helpful here.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
