We need advice please.

Hello,

We will be flying into the States from the UK in November and buying a used cheap DR or KLR.
We then want to travel in central and south America, probably only as far down as Santiago and fly back the the states

My question is, which of the following would work out cheapest/least hastle.

A, Ride the bike to Santiago and sell it/scrap it.

B, Ride to Santiago then air freight it back to the states and sell it.

C, Air freight the bike to Santiago, ride it back to the states and sell it.

D, Ride to Santiago then back to the states and sell it.


I hope to only spend $2000usd on the bike and either way we have to start and end the trip in the States to collect kit for our on going RTW (Our XT660's are stored in NZ)

Any enlightenment would be appreciated, just can't decide which option has the best cost to buggeration factor !!

HI!

Selling it in santiago is very difficult because any chilean can't buy a used imported bike, at least you sell it ridiculouslly cheap, or if you sell it to another US traveller who wants to go north. My 2 cents

A is probably the cheapest and what many people try although if selling in South America there is hassle involved. There is hassle involved in B, C and D as well though.

I intend to try D. Unless the bike blows up in which case it will turn into an A.

B and C are too expensive for a cheap bike to be worthwhile.

The only hastle might be leaving a country without the moto if they link the temporary importation to your passport. Read recent stories of other riders.. maybe it is no problem.

In 2007 I left Brazil and bolivia (minor border crossings) without checking out properly and have never had problems flying back to those countries on the same passport. Enter your last country (Chile) at a minor (read: "non-compuerized") crossing like the one in the south-west corner of Bolivia and you should have no problems...

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
