Cool Where to buy a bike in Santiago

Hola,

My girlfriend and myself are arriving in Santiago in a few days in order to buy a second hand bike and travel up to Colombia.

I am looking for advices on dealers/shops/areas where to buy the bike, thanks for your help!Also, how painful is the paperwork to get the bike in our name?

Gloria (Colombia) and Sebastien (Sebastien)

Hi, you can go here and do a moto search, the ones that come up highlighted in yellow are from dealers, click them to get the dealer name:

Chileautos.cl: miles de vehículos nuevos y usados

Alternatively a couple of larger places which I have researched are:
Ruta Motard - ::: Ruta Motard ::: - Motos y Autos para tí !!!
Procircuit Chile - Procircuit Chile

If you have limited $$ I would recommend 2x Honda CGL 125, they are SO cheap and supposedly very reliable.

But once you get to Colombia will you be able to sell it there? I'm considering a similar trip.

If you are planning this trip when you buy the bike make sure you get the document from the Notaria ´Autorizacion´and you will have no problems leaving the country. I would suggest a buyback arrangement, the Autorizacion can last 6 months so you could ride in a circle and sell it back to them then (and draw up a contract prior so they don´t rip you off). You can not purchase a motorcycle and leave the country with it in your name unless you are a RESIDENT which means living in Chile for a year! Maybe it wasn´t true in the past but it is definitely true now. I believe you can cross borders with the rental papers though, if you choose to rent.

As for selling it in Colombia I think you could sell it to a farmer or something but I am not sure if you could ever go back to Chile as they would charge you with illegally exporting a motorcycle.

Any questions don´t hesitate to ask

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
