4 days out of Johannesburg... Rent a bike.. What to do?
Hello I will be in JOH for work and then have from the 16th at night to the 20th at night free... Would liek to stay within riding/driving distance of JOH as I will be going back to RSA later in the year for a 10+ day vacation.
Any suggestions on what I could do in that area? Would prefer on 2 wheels but 4 wheel suggestions are welcome.
Where could I rent a bike? I don't have a motorcycle licence. In the US I did only enduros and hare scrambles so no motorcycle endorsement and in Egypt its not needed... Will this interfere with renting a bike in RSA?
Thx
AE

Sad to break the news, but you will definately need a licence to hire a bike or car. The main thing is that if you were involed in an accident - no matter who's fault it was. The insurance would not cover and pay out!
Maybe you may be able to hire a scooter somewhere, but not sure. I am from Cape Town, so don't really know the places up in JHB.

Yep, forget the bike rental.
By car there are some interesting spots, depending on what is important to you. To start off: North-east of JHB is the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
Eastwards is the Kruger National Park, and on the way there don't miss the scenic roads where the escarpment crumbles off from 1,700m to 300m. Scenic points are Blyde River Canyon, God's Window, Pilgrims Rest etc.
South of JHB is Lesotho, but this means gravel roads. With a 2x4 SUV no probs. An exceptionally scenis road is from Oxbow down to Mokhotlong, then westwards via Thaba-Tseka to Maseru and north again. Just don't try the Sani Pass except if you've rented a real 4x4.

Great! Will start researching those places now!
Any suggestions on where to stay?
2nd Q is that I need to pick up some replacement parts for my 02 640 Adventure... Seals, gaskets, hoses, cables, clutch hub, water pump. Any shop recommendations?
Thx!

For a useful link to look for accommodation try South Africa Accommodation : Search By Map
They offer the whole price range on accommodation.
In Lesotho two places to stay: In the north at Butha-Buthe there's the Crocodile Inn, and in the centre near Thaba-Tseka the St. James Mission offer accommodation if their guest house is vacant.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
