African fuel price database - please contribute
I know there are lists elsewhere on the web but let's start and maintain an African fuel price database (and Latin America and Asia come to that). Here would be a good place as any so I'll start by throwing in the Saharan country prices which I keep track of regularly on: http://www.sahara-overland.com/country
Should we get a full set of the 30-odd regularly visited African countries in a few weeks/months I (or maybe the sub-Saharan moderator) will make an A-Z country summary here with a date.
My 'cheap' etc comments are in relation to 'high' UK prices (nearly £1/litre petrol & diesel). Giving them in euros or $ may get out of date.
Chris S
Algeria - cheap?Petrol (essence) 21.2 d/litre; Super 30 d/litre(where available; unleaded available in the north); diesel 13.7 d/litre.
Chad - high?In N'Djamena: diesel 600 CFA/L, petrol 650. At least 10% more in the countryside.
Egypt - cheap?90 octane 1 LE, but intentionally made horrible to sell the newly introduced 92 octane.?92 octane 1.4 LE?Diesel 0.6 L.E.
Libya - cheap?2 star petrol 0.12LD/litre; Super 0.16D/litre. Diesel 0.15LD/litre. That and Egypt are about as cheap as it gets in the Sahara.
Mali - high?Petrol and diesel from around 500- CFA/litre - more in remote towns.
Mauritania - moderate
In Atar Petrol about 308 UM/litre; diesel 235 UM/litre. 10% more in Chinguetti and a bit more again in Oudane. A few oogs less in NKT and NDB.
Morocco and Western Sahara - moderate and cheap?7.4 dh diesel, about 14.5 dh petrol. Western Sahara prices: diesel = 4.43dh in Layounne, petrol less than 10dh. In the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilia the price is now about the same as northern Morocco and not much less than mainland Spain ~ €0.90
Niger - high?Diesel 530 CFA/litre in Agadez or 350 in Dirkou for 200L
Tunisia - moderate?Unleaded petrol about 1.1 TD/litre; diesel 0.74 TD.

Hey Chris,
Thats a brilliant idea, will be very helpful to all!
One suggestion: Fuel prices in Africa are directly related to the US dollar price so prices given in US$ will remain valid for longer... Zimbabwe being an extreme example.., but my experience is that over the past 4 years prices in general have remained much closer to their dollar conversion than to their local currency prices. Euros would also work.
Prices as in May 2007:
South Africa SA Rand 7.00 (US1)
Zimbabwe Zim $ 50 000.00 (US1)
Mozambique Met 30.00 (US1.2)
Malawi M Kwacha 160.00 (US 1.1)
Tanzania T Shilling 1150.00 (US .95)
As an example: In 2005 I paid 50 Malawi Kwacha for a litre of petrol (now its 160), but in 2004 MK50 was about $1 so the $ price really does not change much....
My prices for further up until Egypt are a bit out of date, but I can look em up for you if you want...

Zimbabwe -- about USD 1 per liter at the equivalent rate (now about Zim$ 600,000)
Usually you will have to get fuel on the black market, there is plenty about in Harare, however, for other areas I'm not at all sure. I hear fuel is very difficult to come by in most parts of the country. I've been stuck before in places where there is just nothing available, black market or not.
The price can vary quite wildly -- at the end of September it was about 2 USD$ per liter.
In general I assume that it will be about 1 USD per liter where ever I go.
I hope this helps.

Morocco
We've just been through Morocco and Western Sahara. Unleaded was around 10.2Dh per litre in Morocco and 6.2Dh in Western Sahara.
In Mauritania we paid 500UM/litre for some petrol in a 10 litre can, but we were desperate and I think he knew it (we have see-through tanks!). We haven't visited a proper station yet for the pump price in Nouakchott, check back in a few days.

Roads
Sorry i know this is off topic, but perhaps we could also start a roads section, ie where they are shoddy, brilliant, working on or suggested detours? Just got back from kenya and the roads are horrendous. Shocking springs to mind too.
