Starting my plans for Afric trip 2023
Hi all.
Just wanted to say hello, and introduce myself.
I’m looking at doing a trip down the east coast of Africa the options are either RO RO ship into Ciro or air freight into Nairobi. The 1st is my preference but feel it is more tricky with Egypt customs, I am hoping the issue with carnet transiting Ethiopia will be resolved. Probably like a few I have my fingers crossed. Seen blogs of people going through Israel’s or Saudi but seen harder ?
I have done a couple of over-landing trips, Pan America and London to Tokyo but these were with Globusters, this time it’s on my own. I will be taking my F800Gs which has served me well. Not looking to go to far of piste so the heavy bike should be ok. The bike has been modified for overlanding so happy with something I know.
Will be looking to be in North Africa by late September/ October, and taking 4 to 6 months to get to cape town. I think this makes sense as don’t want to be in North Africa at hottest part ( still will probably be very hot ) and try to miss the rainy season, fingers crossed I have timing correct.
Been great reading articles on site, I am in the Info collecting faze at moment, I haven’t joined many forums or Facebook group yet but that is my next place to look for advice
If any of you have any advice I would be grateful, I’m especially looking for info from people on route at moment as situations seen to move quickly in Africa, what’s is / was possible a years ago may well be different now.
Thank for you time

Hi Carts,
Nice getting to know you. I am currently based in Dar Es Salaam and am planning to ride my bike up from SA and then down again after a few months. I'll keep an eye out on updates from your side and share info I may have on conditions from here further down. Have you decided on a route you wish to take to reach SA?
Brgds,
Pieter

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
