Sorry, my info is a few months old now, but we were there in sept, and it was absolutely fine. I know things change quickly in Africa.
We were told on no accounts to leave Bujumburo, if we absolutely even had to go there. Instead we rode all around the countryside and encountered zero problems. The people are some of the friendliest in Africa, and the roads aren't too bad.
It's generally quite an expensive place to stay though. Up there with Rwanda on price.
The border between Rwanda and Burundi is one of the easiest and most hassle free you will see in Africa. The one to Tanz is a bit less smooth, but still pretty easy on the scale of things.
