Buying a bike in South Africa
I would like to buy a bike in South Africa and keep it for a while with my family in Botswana. As i'm familiar with airhead Beemers, that's my preference. Any airhead would be of interest, not just a GS. I might consider a different make, if I see something good.
The obvious questions are:
1. Where can I get the bike? Are there any dealers in SA that specialise in old BMWs? Any other recommendations?
2. How easy will it be for me to get insurance? Or should I perhaps get someone to own and register it in Gabs?
3. Will I need to permanently import it into Botswana? And will that be expensive? There are plenty of SA registered vehicles in Gabs, which I assume are temporarily imported under the SADC trade area agreement.

Thanks Dingo
I'm looking for a bike that I can maintain myself, with only basic skills, but lots of experience with airheads.
I would be interested to hear about your trip from Oman. How did you get across to Africa?

Ivan,
try the following address: http://wilddogtours.co.za/forum/
and maybe: BMW-Motorrad South Africa
The wilddog guys might be able to help you and on the Beemer site you'll find private sales.
Hans

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
