Going the other way
We came into Malawi from Tanzania (exited at Chipata) and we had no trouble getting everything at the border. That is, we didn't go to the Malawi embassy in Tanzania to get the necessary visas. I can't imagine it would be too much different coming from Zambia. We were two Canadians and we crossed in March of last year. Sorry I don't know the current situation.

If u wanna be sure, go to the Malawi Embassy in Lusaka and they have list with all the nations which need a visa.
I'm travelling on a UK Passport and didn't need one, my travelmate had a Austrian passport and had to get a visa (100 U$).

If you need a visa then you have to apply for it either in Lusaka or in Dar es Salaam. At least this was the case last year. Sometimes it is possible to get a 1-2 days visa at the border and do the procedure in Malawi, but only sometimes...
cheers,
Philippe

We crossed the border on UK passports a couple of weeks ago, no problems with the visa, doesn't cost anything. I doubt there will be any probs for Canadians either. All very easy.
